When Kiana “K.C.” McMillian was a child, she would make up stories in her head and write them down. While attending high school, her favorite play was Romeo and Juliette, and she enjoyed reading it, but she sometimes fumbled over her words while reading in front of her classmates. And, of course, children can be cruel. Kiana didn’t like being made fun of and lacked confidence in herself, and she felt that if she couldn’t read in front of a crowd, then perhaps she wasn’t good enough to write. She didn’t think her stories would be well received and feared failing at something she loved. Kiana knew back then that she would one day want to share her imagination with others, but she wasn’t sure about putting herself out there.
Fast forward twenty years later, after the death of her husband’s grandmother on January 13th, 2022, she decided she wouldn’t let the fear of failure hinder her from following her dreams. Before “Gran,” as she and her husband called her, left this earth, she said, “I have lived my life, and I’ve done everything I wanted to do; I’m ready.” K.C. knew that if her life suddenly came to a tragic end, she wouldn’t be satisfied. That statement inspired her, and she decided to follow her dream of becoming an author.
